Community Service

Hoover High School Community Service

We encourage all Hoover High School students to perform at least 100 of community service during their time in high school. While not a graduation requirement, it is an opportunity for students to positively impact their community and begin to change the world, today. These services are not only beneficial to our community, they also provide our students with an invaluable experience. Students who complete the 100 hours and submit the appropriate forms will receive the Hoover Community Service Medal when they graduate.

✅ Do’s (What Counts as Community Service)

  • Serve in an organized program at a nonprofit, hospital, library, community center, senior center, or faith-based organization
  • Work directly with people (tutoring, mentoring, coaching, reading buddies, helping with children, seniors, or people with disabilities)
  • Help indirectly in meaningful ways (preparing meals for shelters, organizing donations, setting up events, translating, or creating educational materials)
  • Support community events like clean-ups, awareness walks, health fairs, and fundraisers
  • Choose opportunities that connect to your career goals (ex: healthcare volunteering if you’re interested in nursing, animal shelters if you want veterinary work, etc.)
  • Participate with proper supervision from a staff member, program coordinator, or teacher

❌ Don’ts (What Does NOT Count as Community Service)

  • Clerical-only tasks (filing papers, copying, answering phones) unless part of a broader program where you also serve people
  • Paid work: If you are being paid, it is not volunteer service
  • Unsupervised time: Hours must be with an official non-profit, school program, or organized community event
  • Passive participation: Attending an event without actively serving (ex: just sitting in a meeting or being part of a club without service activity)
