Vision Statement: The Hoover High School Counseling Program supports the development of lifelong learners and productive members of society who are prepared to pursue meaningful postsecondary opportunities and empowered to discover their purpose. Mission Statement: Hoover High School Counselors provide a data-driven, multi-tiered system of support with culturally inclusive practices to address students’ academic, college/career, and personal/social development. In collaboration with students, families, staff, and the community, counselors facilitate a comprehensive program guided by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). They deliver developmentally appropriate services directly or indirectly to help students build the ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for Success improving achievement, postsecondary access, and the personal and social skills necessary for lifelong success.

Students, you can schedule a meeting with your counselor by booking an appointment. Times are offered before school, after school, during snack, and at lunch.

Appointments are highly recommended. You may drop by without one, but we cannot guarantee that a counselor will be able to meet with you at that time.

We’re excited to welcome Ms. Kelly, our new USC college advisor! 

Ms. Kelly is here to support students with college applications, essays, financial aid, and the California Dream Act, as well as provide 1:1 advising and college workshops throughout the year. Whether you’re exploring colleges, starting applications, or figuring out financial aid, she’s here to help guide you every step of the way.

Important for College & Scholarship Applications

Many of you will be applying to colleges, universities, and scholarships, and you may be asked to submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor. If a recommendation is required, you should complete a brag sheet to help your recommender write a strong, personalized letter on your behalf.

What is a brag sheet?
A brag sheet is a document that gives your teacher or counselor more information about you, your accomplishments, experiences, interests, goals, and personal qualities. 

Be Detailed! When completing your brag sheet, do not simply list the name of an activity, internship, job, or volunteer experience. Explain what you actually did and what you gained from the experience.

Provide details such as:

• What you did during the internship
• When you participated (dates or length of time)
• Your responsibilities
• Skills you developed
• What you learned
• How the experience impacted you
• Why the experience was meaningful to you
• How it connects to your future goals

Follow the instructions below:

• READ all the instructions, PLAN AHEAD for all deadlines, and COMPLETE your brag sheet with detail.
• CREATE AN ACCOUNT at https://apply.commonapp.org/createaccount AND “INVITE YOUR COUNSELOR”. It is highly recommended that you “Waive your FERPA rights” so the recommenders can give a candid response. Please see this link for information on creating a Common App Account https://www.commonapp.org/apply/first-year-students
• COMPLETE THE QUESTIONS section of this document or submit a sheet of responses.
• ATTACH a resume of clubs, activities, and awards? Include what grades you participated in and any leadership positions you held. Include descriptions and limit the use of acronyms. (You can attach the “Activities and Awards” section of your UC or Common App if you do not have a formal resume.)
• SUBMIT the hardcopy of the brag sheet to Mrs. Moses in the counseling office.

***The deadline to submit any letter of recommendation request is November 13, 2026.

During the first five weeks of school, counselors deliver schoolwide Student Connect lessons in addition to our regular Monday Educational Opportunity (EO) time, allowing counselors to connect with students across campus.

After the first five weeks, Student Connect takes place every Monday from 11:10–11:25 a.m. during EO time. This also marks the start of our regular EO schedule, when students report to tutoring or designated free spaces based on their grades and Minga assignment.

During Student Connect, counselors provide engaging schoolwide presentations on topics such as:

• Social-emotional wellness
• Academic success strategies
• College and career readiness
• School resources, opportunities, and important updates
  
  

Through Student Connect, counselors provide students with timely information and resources to help them thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

Fall 2026 GCC Classes – Important Reminder!
If you are enrolled in a Fall 2026 Glendale Community College (GCC) class, please be aware that some classes began on August 31st. Please check your GCC student portal to confirm the official start date for your class.

⚠️ Important: If you do not log in on the first day of class and complete the welcome assignment, you may be dropped from the class. 

Please make sure you:

• Check your GCC portal for your class start date.
• Log in on the first day of class.
• Complete the Welcome Assignment and any required first-day activities.

College rep visits are an excellent way to explore schools you’re interested in, connect directly with admissions representatives, and learn about programs, scholarships, and opportunities you may not find online. We’ll be hosting many more college rep visits throughout the school year, and all grade levels are welcome to attend.
