Counseling Advisory Committee
Did you know the Hoover Counseling team has an advisory committee that meets twice a year? We do! We had a great afternoon sharing highlights from our Mid-Year Report, end of the year projections and the impact of our program.
Our committee which is made up of students, teachers, parents, district reps, and community partners came together to share feedback, ideas, and different perspectives to help strengthen our work.
From classroom lessons and individual meetings to family engagement and college access, we’re proud to see growth in student understanding of graduation requirements, A–G, and overall college and career readiness.
As we look ahead, expanding our capacity would allow us to deepen this impact and support even more students.

Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, celebrated in May, honors the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States. It is a time to recognize the diverse traditions, achievements, and lasting impact of AAPI communities in shaping our society. We also take this opportunity to reflect on the importance of inclusion, representation, and respect for all cultures. Let’s celebrate and learn from the vibrant voices and stories that continue to strengthen our community. Mental Health Awareness Month
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. During this time, we recognize the importance of emotional well-being and remind students that seeking support is a sign of strength. High school can bring academic, social, and personal pressures. If you are feeling overwhelmed/stressed, please reach out to a trusted adult, counselor, teacher, or mental health professional for support. We are here for you.

Every Monday from 11:10 am - 11:25 am during EO time, counselors deliver engaging, school-wide presentations designed to inform and inspire our students. Teachers log into Google Meets at the end of 3rd period and project the presentation onto their screen for students to see.
During these sessions, counselors cover a variety of topics, including:
- Strategies for social-emotional wellness
- Tips for academic success
- College and career readiness insights
- Upcoming school-wide events
We look forward to connecting with our students each week and providing valuable resources to help them thrive both inside and outside the classroom. Click below to view this week's presentation.

Students, you can schedule a meeting with your counselor by scanning the QR code below. Appointment times are offered before school, after school, during snack, and at lunch.
Appointments are highly recommended. You may drop by without one, but we cannot guarantee that a counselor will be able to meet with you at that time.
If you are experiencing a crisis, please let an adult know and come straight to the counseling office.

Come and support Hoover's incredible music programs at their Spring Concert. There will be performances by Choir, Tornado Winds, Jazz Band, String Orchestra, and Concert Band!

Teen Academy Program
Interested in a career in law enforcement? The Teen Academy program is a great opportunity for students to get hands-on exposure to law enforcement, build confidence, develop leadership skills, and learn more about teamwork, discipline, and public service in a positive environment.

Class of 2027 Senior Portraits
Senior portrait appointments are now open for the class of 2027!
To schedule your session, please visit the link below, enter Hoover's zip code (91202), select Hoover High School, verify your information, and choose an available time. https://prestigeportraits.com/
Appointments are available from June 1 - June 5. Please sign up as soon as possible, as time slots fill quickly. On the day of your appointment, report to Room 12101. For the initial photo, students must wear a plain black top with no print. If you purchase a package that includes additional outfits, please bring your change of clothes.

Vape-Free Student Contest - Deadline May 22
Glendale Council PTA presents the Vape-Free Student Contest. This creative contest is open to students in grades 6–8 and 9–12 and encourages students to promote a positive, vape-free message through their original work. Students can review contest guidelines and submit their entries using the Google Form below: Vape-Free Student Contest Submission Form

Planning to join a sports team next school year? Make sure you are cleared and ready to participate by completing your required sports physical.
For your convenience, a mobile clinic will be available on campus on the following dates:

Ex Officio Student Commissioner Qualification
- A high school junior or above who attends an institute of higher learning in Glendale and/or lives in Glendale.
- Dedicated to the Glendale community.
- Interested in environmental issues.
- Available the first Thursday of the month at 5:30 PM to participate in Commission meetings.
Why Become an Ex Officio Student Commissioner?
- Gain experience in local government and Glendale's legislative process.

Verdugo Regional Crime Lab - Paid Internship
Step into a real crime lab this summer - get paid, gain hands-on experience, and see what forensic science is actually like behind the scenes.
The Verdugo Regional Crime Laboratory Forensic Science High School Internship Program (paid) provides an opportunity for high school students to explore career options, acquire knowledge and skills complementary to academic studies, gain experience in scientific settings for resume and college applications and create a solid foundation for a forensic science career.
DUE FRIDAY, MAY 22, 2026
Requirements:
- 3.0 GPA or higher
- Six week program (MUST ATTEND ALL DAYS) - July 6 – August 14th
- Monday to Thursday 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM
- Successful completion of a comprehensive background check
- Profession laboratory attire (examples below - slacks, pant with no holes, blouses, sweaters, polo, button down shirts)
Application Process:
- Fill out this google form
- Write a 500-750 word essay described below
- 1 campus recommendation letter & 1 community member recommendation (no family members please)
Pay- Approximately $18 per hour for selected participants (work permits issued through your campus' Counseling office once hired)
All students must sign “Volunteer Confidentiality” form (see below)
Participants of the program must be aware that they may be exposed to ongoing criminal investigations, deceased individuals and other sensitive materials.

Jewel City Hacks 4.0 is a 12-hour, mentor-guided, computer-mediated, invention-based learning competition where students will design, build, and showcase their own technology projects.

Industry Mentors & Support Students will be guided by professionals from leading companies like Google, Cisco, ADP, Meta, Vercel, Apple, Disney, and more.

UCLA Summer Programs – Design, Gaming, & AI
|

Stanford AI and Social Good Program
Inspirit AI pairs grades 9–12 students with Stanford and MIT researchers to build original AI projects such as AI-powered food insecurity mapping and modeling for mental health intervention. Students publish their research in academic journals and compete at competitions like Regeneron ISEF.

Rising Seniors - Paid Summer Internship Opportunity – Bloomberg Arts Internship (BAI)
Attention rising seniors! The Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture, in partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies, is offering an exciting paid summer internship program for Summer 2026.
Program Details: • 8-week paid internship (June 15 – August 7, 2026) • Open to rising public high school seniors • Placement at local arts & cultural organizations across LA County

Summer 2026 Opportunity for Students – Lewis & Clark College Programs
Lewis & Clark College is offering expert-led summer residential programs for high school students in Summer 2026! These programs provide a unique opportunity for students to build college readiness skills, explore academic interests, and experience life on a beautiful Pacific Northwest campus.
Students who complete a program are eligible for a minimum $20,000 annual scholarship if they are later accepted and enroll at Lewis & Clark. In addition to hands-on learning, students will enjoy field trips around Oregon, explore Portland’s vibrant culture, and connect with peers from across the country.
Programs include options such as Creative Writing, Data Science, Entrepreneurship, Health Care, Speech & Debate, and Theatre, with sessions running from June through July.

UCLA Emerging Filmmakers
Are you creative and passionate about filmmaking, TV writing, or media production? UCLA’s Emerging Filmmakers pre-college program offers an exciting opportunity for high school students to gain hands-on experience working with industry tools, learn from entertainment professionals, and develop storytelling skills at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television this summer.
Participants in the program work with UCLA production spaces, editing labs, and equipment while learning fundamentals of filmmaking, collaboration, and creative production. Students also live on UCLA’s campus and become part of the vibrant creative community in Los Angeles — one of the world’s leading centers for entertainment.
Multiple tracks are available, including digital filmmaking, cinematography, TV writing, and media parks. Those interested can fill out the interest form online to stay updated on programs and how to apply.
Scholarships
A limited number of partial or full scholarships are available based on financial need and merit to help lower the cost for eligible students — though travel and personal expenses may not be covered by the award.

Second semester grades are due on June 5, and we only have a few weeks left in the school year. This is the perfect time to stay focused, keep up with assignments, and reach out for support if you need it. Let’s finish the school year strong!
Please review the following reminders and tips for a successful 2nd semester.
Reminders:
The way you begin often sets the tone for the whole semester
Create good habits that you will follow throughout the semester
Every assignment, quiz, and participation point matters
Work hard now = less stress later!
How Not to Fall Behind:
Get organized (planner, materials, charged/working Chromebook)
Check your grades and portal weekly
Complete every assignments on time. Do not count on turning in your work at the end of the semester
Ask for help early (teachers, counselors, tutoring)
Build routines: study schedule, phone off, focused space (Homework lab)
Attendance matters! Attend every day and be on time

Work Opportunity - Angeleno Corps Due May 25
Angeleno Corps is an intensive, 10-month program (September 2026 – June 2027) for individuals aged 18–30. Participants work 40 hours per month at partner organizations while attending school or a vocational program, earning a monthly stipend of $1,000.
The program offers experience in several career areas, including:
- Education & Child Care / Early Childhood - Housing Rights - Health, Climate & Environmental Justice - Immigration Assistance - Nutrition & Food Security - Technology & Digital Equity - Adult Day Services
Eligibility & Application Details:
- Requirements: Students must plan to attend a community college, university, or trade school at least part-time this coming Fall. Please refer to the attached flyer for full eligibility requirements.
- Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least 18 years old by September 15th. If a student is currently 17 but will turn 18 by the deadline, please have them contact me or Yaret directly to ensure their application is correctly transferred over to Angeleno Corps.

Therapy Dog - Kaya
Meet Kaya, our therapy dog! Kaya is here to help make our campus a calmer and more positive place! Whether you’re feeling stressed and anxious, or you just love dogs, stop by to show Kaya some love. She is super calm and friendly and loves being pet by our students. You can find Kaya in the upper quad and lower every Friday during lunch.

The Los Angeles County Commission on Disabilities is now accepting applications for the 2026 Memorial Scholarship Program. These scholarships support students with disabilities in pursuing higher education and becoming more independent and self-sufficient.

To help your student stay organized with deadlines and requirements, I created a College & Scholarship Application Tracker. This tool allows students to keep track of applications, essays, recommendation letters, financial aid, and scholarships in one place.
Please note: families must make a copy of the tracker in order to use it.
Instructions:
Open the tracker here: College & Scholarship Application Tracker.
In the top menu, click File → Make a copy.
Save the copy to your own Google Drive.
Your student can then begin entering their colleges and scholarships.
This resource is optional but highly recommended to keep students on top of their deadlines and organized throughout senior year.
